Description

Liraglutide Injectable is a prescription medication used to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and support weight loss and weight management in eligible adults. Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It works by enhancing insulin secretion in response to meals, reducing glucagon levels, slowing digestion, and regulating appetite. This helps improve blood sugar control and supports weight loss when paired with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

  • Supports blood sugar control: Helps improve blood sugar levels by increasing insulin release when needed and reducing glucagon production.
  • Supports weight loss: Helps reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, making it easier to manage food intake.
  • Once-daily injection: Simple daily dosing helps maintain consistent blood sugar and weight management.
  • Clinically proven: Shown to improve blood sugar control and support meaningful weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.
  • Suitable for eligible adults: Liraglutide is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes (depending on the brand) and for weight management in eligible adults with obesity or overweight with weight-related health conditions.

Warnings

  • Do not use if you:
    • Are allergic to liraglutide or any of the ingredients in the medication.

    • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

    • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

  • Consult a doctor before use if you:
    • Have a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, or severe gastrointestinal problems.

    • Are taking other medications to manage blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylureas, as using these with liraglutide may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

    • Have diabetic retinopathy or any other significant medical conditions that may require closer monitoring.

  • Discontinue use and seek medical attention if:
    • You experience severe and persistent stomach pain, with or without nausea and vomiting (possible signs of pancreatitis).

    • You notice a lump or swelling in your neck, develop hoarseness, or have difficulty swallowing (potential signs of thyroid problems).

    • You develop symptoms of gallbladder disease, such as pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, or jaundice.

Not suitable for use in children: Liraglutide for weight management is not approved for use in children under 18 years of age.

Keep out of reach of children: This is a prescription medication and should only be used by the person for whom it has been prescribed.

Directions

  • Dosage:

Liraglutide is administered as a once-daily injection, with the starting dose typically at 0.6 mg per day. Your healthcare provider will gradually increase the dose, usually at weekly intervals, until the recommended maintenance dose is reached, depending on your response to treatment.

  • Administration:

Inject liraglutide under the skin (subcutaneous injection) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites to help prevent irritation. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider for the correct injection technique.

  • Take with or without food:

Liraglutide can be injected at any time of day, with or without meals, but it should be taken at approximately the same time each day. Maintaining a healthy diet and regular physical activity will help achieve the best results.

  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose:

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is within 12 hours of your usual dosing time. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take an extra dose or double the dose to make up for a missed one.

  • Store properly:

Store liraglutide in the refrigerator before first use. After first use, the pen can be stored either in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to 30 days. Do not freeze the medication, and keep the pen cap on to protect it from light.
