Ketotifen 1mg is an antihistamine with mast cell stabilising properties. It is used in the prevention of allergic conditions, particularly allergic asthma, and may also be prescribed for other allergy-related conditions as determined by a clinician.
Unlike fast-acting antihistamines used for immediate symptom relief, Ketotifen works gradually by preventing the release of substances in the body that cause allergic reactions. For this reason, it is taken regularly and may take several weeks to achieve its full effect.
Ketotifen tablets are taken by mouth and are available only with a prescription following a clinical assessment.
Ketotifen may not be suitable for everyone. Do not take this medicine if you:
Are allergic to ketotifen or any of the tablet ingredients
Speak to your prescriber before taking Ketotifen if you:
Have epilepsy or a history of seizures
Have diabetes
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Are taking other medicines that cause drowsiness
Ketotifen can cause drowsiness, particularly when starting treatment. Avoid alcohol and take care when driving or operating machinery.
